Discussion Assignment Five

For this week's assignment, you have several choices:

  • Try to find digital storytelling tutorials, workshop materials, training activities or "how to" information created by others  especially those that will help people create their own digital stories--and could be added to our EUODS website;

  • Review the tutorial information on the current and former EUODS websites and discuss how these materials could be improved and expanded. Please be specific in your critique and suggestions;

  • Examples of actual digital stories created by others that we could feature on our EUODS website.

When you have found a suitable example of one of the items described above, post a comment to Discussion Assignment Five, in which you include the following information:

  • A description of what you found

  • The URL of the resource

  • The name of the author/developer(s) and any information about them, if available

  • A brief synopsis in your own words of what the material is about, especially any information related to the intended audience, why it was created, and how it might be used

  • Any other information you think would be helpful to visitors to our website if this material were added

Name of training: Mobile Learning Digital Storytelling

Website: http://wisdom.wright.edu/tutorials/DS_Web.htm

author: Daniel meadows

This website was and is great!! It gives a step by step tutoral of how to create a digital story in iMovie. The website also goes through some possible uses of digital story telling from using it in school to using it in a business meeting. The website tells the benefits to story telling as well. It should be added to the EUODS site because the tutoral is well put together and easy to understand.

The title of this article is “Digital Storytelling: A Tutorial in 10 Easy Stepts” written by J.D. Lasica in 2006. The URL is noted above. This author gives ten tips on how to create digital storytelling, starting from deciding on the story, gathering of materials, writing of script, preparation of equipment, creating a storyboard, digitizing media, voice recording, addition of music, editing of story and placing digital story onto web. It is very informative. Novice learners like me would benefit from such instructions, since it does go into detail step by step technique and software needed to produce this media.

The title of this article is “How to Make Digital Stories Using iMovie HD in Apple’s iLife’06”. The tutorial notes were written by Daniel Meadows. It gives step by step instructions on how to make a digital story. However, it’s focus is for Apple users.

Here is another tool that you can use to make DS on the web and it is free-other than using MS Photostory.

VoiceThread is a multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to leave comments in 5 ways--using voice (with a mic or phone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). Users can even doodle on the media as they comment. This video explains how VoiceThread works.

I found a tutorial workshop called "What is Digital Storytelling" produced by The Digital Expressions Group. The video was written by Garfield Williams, Edited by JaModi Robinson, and Music by Byron Logan.
I liked this DS because it was to the point and would be understood by anyone from junior high school and beyond. Another interesting aspect of this tutorial was the graphics correlated with the topics being used/presented. I think this tutorial is appealing because it has a "catchy" musical background and I think it would catch the interest of the younger generation.

Here is the website:

L Kieler

I found this site called Digital Storytelling--Using Technology to Tell Stories. Site is part of the Western Massachusetts Writing Project. In the Practical Guide is a section on How to Create a Digital Story--Step by Step Guide. Also there are lesson plans, rubrics, examples, resources, you name it.

The site can be found at
Digital StorytellingGuide

L Kieler

I also found the following training power-point. When you go to this wikisite, there are even other online resources linked to the page. Once you click on "Igniting Student Creativity Through Digital Storytelling" by Jennifer Dorman, other digital power-points appear so that you can find the one you want to adapt from or use to teach from.

The link is

Just did a brief look see at the tutorial section past and present. I have a question. Why only PhotoStory 3 tutorials? Why no MovieMaker tutorials? Is it because it is so involved? Tutorials are needed for MovieMaker because of being able to add clips and dub out the sound of it and record yours over it. People need to know how to do that if they are just beginning or have memories like mine.

Kieler I saw the site you posted Digital Storytelling--Using Technology to Tell Stories and it was very informational.. It went so much beyond just the story telling by provide the rubic.

Digital Story Telling 101: A Step by Step Guide for Teachers and Students to Create a Digital Story.

http://masherwould.googlepages.com/digitalstorytelling101

This site gives a 10 lesson plan on how to create a DS. It also has a section for student resources and instructor resources.

This site was designed by the "Famous Mr Ed-Tech." He is a computer teacher who is studying to become an educational technologist at San Diego State University who has fond memories of watching Mr. Ed. It is also copyrighted by Matt Sherwood 2008maybe he is "The Famous Mr. Ed-Tech"

Tatiana

this site has many tips, resources, and links for DS. It has information on how DS enhances the skills of students in learning. It has 5 steps on how to create a DS. It also has a tutorial for moviemaker, tips using editing software and also tips for using a camera. It has examples and links to other sites for more information. Even the UH DS website is on it.

This site had a moviemaker tutorial

Deidre

I agree with L Kieler, we should try to make sure that the web site provides links for tutorials to most of the major programs, and includes both Mac and PC friendly sites.

Deidre

I chose the option of doing a critique of the former and current website tutorial sections.

As I said earlier in my followup comment to L Kieler, I think adding information about other programs in addition to PhotoStory3 would be good. I really like that the current site has a link to download PhotoStory3, and maybe we could add links to download other programs.

I think the storyboarding tutorial on the former site is good, and I think it should be added back into the current site. I like that it walks you through doing a storyboard in Word, but I think it also might be useful to have just a pre-made Word storyboard template that people could download and use. I think storyboarding is a very important part of the process.

Likewise, I think the information on copyright is important and should be left in, though maybe not as a word document. And the step-by-step overview on the bottom or the previous page could perhaps be expanded upon and added in to the current page, again possibly as a new page with links inside it rather than as a Word document.

The new page is WAY more attractive, and I think the design is beautiful and should be kept.

Deidre

Tatiana,

I LOVE VoiceThread. It is too bad that it's not free, but it looks like an excellent program with a lot of really cool possibilities for its use. I think we should definitely figure out a way to use this; it has a lot of potential for health care learning.

How do we feel about endorsing/advertising for-profit things like this on the website?

Deidre

I just saw that the new website DOES have the storyboarding and overview sections, but they are listed under "create" rather than tutorials. I think this should all go under tutorials; the first page might be the overview and then it could have links to the PhotoStory3 page and the storyboarding page and any other programming pages we might want to add. The getting started page is also a bit visually boring compared to the vividness of the other pages.

I really like the expanded storyboarding section. I do think we should add a template in MS Word rather than PDF format, as a lot of people don't have full versions of Adobe. The images on this page work well, as does the clickable storyboard.

Anita

Digital Storytelling Cookbook
The above link is a pdf book that has the recipe of making a digital story from topic ideas, examples, tips, scripting, storyboarding, getting images, recording etc. It is quite a good resource and a lot of ideas for the final project.

Anita

DS Lesson Plans
I had provided the above link in another discussion. But here it is again. There are a lot of lesson plans for teachers to teach students issues of diversity and culture using digital storytelling.
Tatiana, the masherwould link is really nice. Very well organized steps and easy to explore links. That is a good resource to be included in the DS website

Anita

Memory Miner
The above is another software for creating digital stories. Again like VoiceThread, it isn't a free one. But you can download a try out version and try it out before actually buying it.

Anita

Mixbook
The above website is pretty much like Flickr. The difference is that you can make a photo book on this site. Not exactly a digital story, but pretty much on those lines, something like an online scrapbook. The best part, this website is primarily education professionals, students etc. Teachers and students can make a photo story and share it online as well as edit it online. Its free and you just have to sign up like Flickr and start using it. They have some examples of educational photo books that other teachers/students have made. I know this isn't actually an actual DS making software, but I found it pretty cool and useful. Let me know if you guys think of this as a good resource.

Deidre

Anita,

I agree with you that the Mixbook is a really cool tool that has a lot of potential uses in health care and other education.

There is a space on the new website called "Web 2.0" that has resources about blogging and other non-DS stuff that is cool; maybe we could include this there?

Good idea Deidre. That's what I felt. Mixbook didn't seem like the usual run-of-the-mill DS softwares. Its more like an online scrapbook. Or a better way of making presentations thank powerpoint. Since it is online there isn't the headache of saving your work on a flash drive or something. I think I will be using this resource pretty soon.

I tried to dig out something from Youtube and the outcome really surprises me. The tutorial video clips on Youtube are fantastic.

I think these videos can going well with the tutorial documents on EUODS website.

I love the idea of Mixbook, Anita. It's a new direction of web 2.0 application. Based on this idea, I believe a "photo story web 2.0 version" will be surfaced soon.

L Kieler

I am posting this Honda DS here. It is not a training video for DS. It IS a training video for taking risks and the idea that failure leads to success. It is a good video for kids to see as a springboard for a discussion on failure and success. With my gifted population, fear of failure or less than perfection is often crippling. Take a look at the video, you might want to use it.

This is a test to see if I can create a hypertext link.

Here's the link
Creative Narrations

Lauren

Yippee.. it worked! That was easy enough. Now, about the link:

Creative Narrations is an organization that provides support and training in DS to help people convey their personal stories. The site has many examples of such personal digital stories for visitors to view.

Lauren

We have many elements of Joe Lambert's work on our website; however, I didn't see the link to his main site:
Memory's Voices

I think it has so many great resources, and I really like the design of his webpages.

I found these two "how to" web sites which give very simple, clear guides to creating digital stories.
1. How to create simple digtal stories by Helen C. Barrette.
This site consists of links to many other sites on DS, including EUODS, which would be a great source of materials for teachers and students.
This is the link:
How to create simple digital stories
2. Creating your photo story on Teachnet.ie. The guide in this site is crystal-clear, with a PDF file of instruction on how to use Photostory 3. This site is brief, to-the-point, very convenient for teacher in preparing lesson plans and giving handouts on building DS.
This is the link:

Engenderhealth HIV in men stories
Engenderhealth is an international organization working towards reproductive health issues in developing nations. The above link is of digital stories pertaining to HIV in Indian men and how they deal with the disease and the stigma associated with it in the Indian society. This link could be added in the EUDOS site under examples of health related digital stories.

Narratives for the Future - UNESCO
UNESCO helps bring about awareness about the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) for social change. The above story is created and narrated by an Indian villager from Bengal (east India). He talks about his village, occupation as a farmer and the impact of floods on his crops and livelihood. The DS is in the local language but there are English subtitles translating the narration. Good resource for categories like International or Cultural or Social issues.

Anita

Wow, Leon. I followed your links to Youtube DS tutorials. Gosh, what a huge amount of stuff is out there on Youtube relating to DS. Cool, I'm thinking I don't need to attend tomorrow's class! Can learn how to make a story from Youtube! Sorry Dr. Robin!

Anita

Resources from a DS workshop by a site called Innovative Teaching Concepts
This site has a lot of resource links for many categories of information pertaining to creating digital stories. The workshop Powerpoint presentation is really nice and is a good resource to be used in teaching students about DS.

A. Nguyen

Leon,
I opened the links you found from YouTube, and they are really good, especially the first one. It's a great idea to add links with visual instructions on DS.

Anita

Nice Edutopia article of Tips to use Digital storytelling in the classroom written by Jennifer New.

I agree with Lauren that Creative Narrations is a very resourceful site. Some of the examples on this site are very good ones in plot and image choice.

mymelchor

I definitely like the links from YouTube that Leon posted.
They are very user friendly.

mymelchor

Lauren, I love the fact that there are some DS in Spanish. Even technology is bilingual :)
This just goes to show how anyone can create a DS!

Maybe the DS website can be bilingual-could have some links in other languages. Just a thought-hmmmm.....

Yo Stiger

Wow, lots of great links! I thought Leon's YouTube links were great!

Here are some how to links that I found:

Teachingteachers.com is designed for teachers and discusses how people of all ages can create digital stories. Very user-friendly

the EUODS website

Not sure if this is too basic, but it is the Microsoft tutorial on just how to use Photostory
the EUODS website

This is a website that I use to teach my kiddos how to use Photostory 3.
Using Microsoft Photostory 3
By: David Jakes, Instructional Technology Coordinator at Community High School District 99 in Downers Grove, IL
http://www.jakesonline.org/photostory.htm
http://www.jakesonline.org/photostory3.pdf

His website has several tutorials on it, so I included the link for the PDF file of his tutorial on Photostory.
This tutorial takes you step by step, with screenshots, of Photostory 3. It also includes links and helpful "how-tos" in case you have a student that gets stuck. An example is a link to find images if you can't find what you are looking for. He provides clear, easy to follow instructions that students in middle school to high school can easily follow.

klrutter

Tatiana,
I absolutely love Voicethread! I've never seen it before, but this will be so nice for my students to use to offer constructive feedback on peers photostories! We could add this to the EUODS website under tutorials. Excellent find!

Chi-Liang Yu

I think Honda Video on Failure is a very professional video production. This is one of the questions that confuses me for a long time. What's the boundary between DST and video productions? They might have lots of portions in common, but DS should out stand in some features.

Shawn

I like to turn to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) whenever possible; I have had very good luck with resources from this organization in the past (I was one of the original contributors and users of the W3C and continue to use it a great deal today).

This resource can be found at: http://www.w3.org/2007/08/video/minutes and contains a plethora of usable media publishing assets.

This particular training resource contains many presentations (from folks at Apple to Educators) and is filled with valuable information. It’s easy to lose track of time while there, so set your alarm or something before you get started!
