Discussion Assignment Eight

For this week's assignment, you should try to find examples of blogs and/or podcasts related to digital storytelling that you feel should be added to the EUODS website.

Post a message in which you describe the blog and/or podcast resources you found and indicate why you feel they should be added to our EUODS website.

Important Notes:

  1. Be sure to review the material on these topics on the current website so that you do not duplicate material that has already been included.

  2. Please limit this week's research to Blogs and Podcasts. For next week, you will be asked to explore the use of other Web 2.0 resources (such as Wikis, Social Bookmarks, Social Networks), so if you find useful resources of this type, please wait until next week to discuss them.

Blogs are problematic it seems. Often they are created to fulfill some requirement for a class. Once that class is over the blog sits idle and becomes obsolete. It is therefore hard to find a blog that has lasting value. If you go to a professional site's blog, often it is a promotion of their books or materials.

I did find the following blog titled "Kevin's Meandering Mind". This blog largely deals with a project titled "Slices of Life". The information though pertains to digital storytelling. The site is geared towards teachers using DS with their students. It includes links to other DS Blogs as well as other tools you might want to use and categories such as comics etc... It appears to be current.

It can be accessed at

Dr. Robin,
The Podcast page under Web 2.0 is quite unfriendly to my eyes. It was difficult for me to see red letters against a purple background. Do you have plans to change the color design on this page?

The SITE blog spot would be a nice addition to the Web 2.0 section. It is currently not included in the section of our Digital Storytelling Website. This blog spot is maintained by the Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education. It contains useful ideas on how to incorporate digital storytelling for educational uses. This site would be a very nice addition under the Blogs section of Web 2.0.

Matthew Needleman created the above blog which discusses the uses of digital storytelling, podcast and other video projects in the classroom. This blog spot is quite comprehensive. It has links to other blog sites. It’s focus is also educational uses of videos and digital storytelling in the classroom.

Dan Meyer is the creator of the above blog site. The website contains several podcasts. The first video clip on “Projective Motion” is educational. I find the other two video clips, “World Series of Poker” and “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Cigotie?” not so educational. When I tried access other contents on this blog spot, these contents could not be accessed. However, the video clips are functional.

TechHEds is a technology in higher education podcast from the University of Colorado Denver. Their goal is to keep educators up-to-date with tech headlines, featuring content about the basics and/or the latest in online tools.

If you use Facebook, there's a group you can join, Digital Storytelling.
The Center for Digital Storytelling is a California-based non-profit 501(c)3 arts organization rooted in the art of personal storytelling. They have a great discussion board with around three hundred members from all over the world.

This isn't truly a DS blog, it's an ePortfolios blog, but a lot of the entries are related to DS, and it reminded me of a previous discussion we had about using DS in ePortfolios, so here it is:

L Kieler, I really like the Kevin's Meandering Mind site. He has some creative ideas for using DS in education, and it's less of a boring, stuffy sort of blog than a lot of the others.

Deidre

Jen, I think the Needleman's blog is my favorite. It's very comprehensive...there's a TON of info there. And it's got a lot of practical ideas and concrete how-tos. It's also a fun and appealing blog. This one should definitely be added to our links.

Seraching for good blogs to add to EUODS is more difficult than searching for web sites. One of the reasons is bloggers, even though they are professionals, tend to discuss and exchange opinions rather than presenting or explaining.
I found this blog which is titled "Resources" with a good overview on Digital Storytelling and its uses for educational purposes. More important, the post is a great resource whe searching for links related to DS. This is the address of the blog: Resources

This Podcast is talking about traditional storytelling meets the digital technology and how they fit in today's education. It talk about some papers and evidence that DST is a powerful teaching tools for the 21st classroom, as we know it's engaging, promote teaching and learning, and so on. Challenges are also mentioned for educators when using DST in the classroom.

Another Podcast from the same web site talking about "Digital Storytelling in the Classroom."

This blog is from Bernajean who is an author of digitales and is also a speach and debate coach on top of the other many passions she has.

http://web.mac.com/bernajeanporter/iWeb/Site/Blogs/Blogs.html

Stories Need to Lead Image Choices. She says that "there are many artistic ways to approach the use of images that have value and help students master visual literacy, digital storytelling focuses the students to rely on their narrative STORY driving their image choices rather than images driving the story."

Here is just another way to do a DS and it maybe more challenging for students. However, the benifits can be out of this world because the story will be told differently.

Tatiana

The podcast that Leon found from Rebecca Marciniak was very informative and I believe it would also be a good one to put on the website because it just gives an educator more reason why DS is another wonderful tool to use in the classroom.

Bernajean's blog is really great. I loved the Granny smith digital story in their 'Story of the month' feature. The autobiographical style used in the story is amazing and the narrator has done a fabulous job bring such a simple story to life.

Anita

Needleman's link is really great. It has a lot of good links. I particularly liked the link to 'Classroom 2.0' blog that talks about integrating DS and other Web 2.0 technology in classrooms. This is a good resource for novice teachers to get good ideas about using instructional technology. It quite a comprehensive blog. Even the Techeds 'The secret is out' podcast is very informative in using cell phones as a Web 2.0 medium for accessing relevant information.

Integrating ICT into the MFL classroom
This a blog/podcast resource site developed by Joe Dale, a French teacher from South east England. The site talks about using all kinds of Web 2.0 technologies including digital storytelling in teaching/learning foreign languages. Its quite an amazing site with lots of tips/advice on how to teach foreign languages using instructional technologies. There is also a podcast in using our favorite Voice Thread for DS. I think this is a good resource for the EUODS site and a lot of the podcasts are great for understanding Web 2.0 especially for those that are new to this technology.

A. Nguyen

JLN,
I agree that SITEdigital is avery good blog to add to EUODS. The bloggers seem to be teachers or professionals who have been to conferences on DS or are using DS in their ativities, so the exchanges involve their real-life experiences with DS in their classrooms, with their students, and updated information on digital storytelling.

A. Nguyen

Tatiana,
I like the Bernajean blog. It shows how DS has become so popular that it reaches out of the school in summer activities like the DS camps described in here. These are also a good form of DS training.

Anita

Digital Quill is Jon Orech's wiki page who is an English teacher based in Illinois. He has also done a lot of work in using Educational Technology like DS in classrooms. His wikipage is very informative with a lot of links, examples, mini tutorials, resources etc. I was trying to find this link on the EUDOS site since Jon Orech's name sounds familiar. But couldn't find it, so have added it here. He has ideas for training staff for DS, which is the part I liked the most about his wiki. I hope that in the future he adds some more ideas about Teacher training in DS. You can join this wiki and he has a discussion page where we can post some of our ideas. I like the fact that the topics on this page are very organized and it doesn't take much time to find the information that you're looking for.

L Kieler

Anita, perhaps you are thinking about Jason Ohler. Jon Orech is close enough for it to look familiar.

Anita

Actually I remember now, I saw his name on another blog earlier when I was looking for teacher blogs for another course. Yes, but the names do sound similar.

As I was searching for a podcast dealing with last week's assignment,
this one caught my attention because it stated "free technology...." We
all know how we like "free" . The address is:
http://www.freetech4teachers.com/2008/05/educational-podcasts-to-listen-
to-this.htmlmaterials . The podcast is:
http://www.freetech4teachers.com/2008/05/educational-podcasts-to-listen-
to-this.html
This podcast was created by someone at Eastern Illinois Univerisity.
The concept of this educational for teachers is that Tom Grissom will
discuss a particular topic in technology and how it can be applied to
one's educational task. There is also a link that indicates how teachers
can go online and discuss/share thoughts with one another and Tom. It
is called "TechTalk4Teachers"-I like the title. There are other links to
view that may spark some interest in other technology tools for
educational/student purposes.

Dr. Robin, as I listened to Tom speak on the podcast about face.com , I could see
you creating something like this for U of H-this would be right up your
alley.

I have been hearing more and more about podcasting in the classroom lately. There are author podcasts, library podcasts, book review podcasts.

This is a great classroom site that features digital storytelling and podcasts to discuss books, review math concepts and a lot more:
http://mizmercer.edublogs.org/2008/01/12/podcasting-for-eld/

This is another blogger who uses digital story telling on his education blog. He does little video slice of the day features, and encourages others to do the same by posting topics. He discusses using digital storytelling in the classroom and reflects on how it is working out for him. Good site for teachers.
http://dogtrax.edublogs.org/

Here is another teacher who posts DS on her web page and reflects on the classroom.
http://www.teachersatrisk.com/

There are hundreds of bloggers who use digital storytelling!

I really don’t think of digital stories and podcasts being the same as podcast don’t contain images.

This is a podcast about how the author got into digital storytelling

TechHEds is really cool and it keeps updating when I read this post.

Shawn

While it seems that blogs on the topic of Digital Storytelling are somewhat evasive (they exist, largely embedded in folks’ facebook/myspace accounts, or as discussion blogs like the one we’re using this semester in this class), podcasts on the subject are a bit more prevalent.

Visiting Podcast Alley (http://www.podcastalley.com/) produces over a hundred podcasts related to digital storytelling. Though not entirely from the education genre, what this shows me is the ubiquity associated with the medium and the sprawl that is taking place throughout existing and established channels of information delivery.
