Discussion Assignment Two - A

This week's primary assignment is to conduct some research online to find other DS websites that should be featured on our site. Currently, when you go to the Links menu and select Other DS Sites (http://digitalstorytelling.coe.uh.edu/other_ds_sites.html), you will see that there are 16 other websites listed with a sentence or two description.

For this week, try to find at least three different really good DS websites that are not already listed on our site. Then write a brief one to two sentence description of each site.

You should also consider how more websites might listed on our site so that we don't just have another long list of web links; and perhaps include suggestions for some type of categorization system that could be added to this page of the EUODS website.

And although this may be a little difficult, try to check out the postings of other students for this assignment before you post your own, so that we don't end up with the same websites being described by multiple people.

When you have determined which websites you found that you think should be added to our site, post a comment in which you discuss the websites you found, why you think they should be added to our site, and include the brief description you wrote for each site. In addition, please add any ideas you have about a category system that we might use to present these sites.

The three sites I found are:

BBC Digital Storytelling

http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/audiovideo/sites/galleries/pages/digitalstorytelling.shtml

This site features a section devoted to making your own digital story, myriad examples of the digital stories of others, and links to several digital story projects in which you can participate. (This is a different BBC site than the ones already listed.)

Zero Divide

http://www.zerodivide.org/

This site focuses on helping community organizations to bridge the divide between higher and lower socioeconomic status by training people in use of digital storytelling. There are some sample videos, as well as links to some of the community organizations they have partnered with in communty use of digital stories.

Stories for Change

http://storiesforchange.net/

As the name implies, this site focuses on training workshop leaders and facilitators to use digital storees in communities for social change.

I tried to find some sites relating to use of digital stories in psychiatry or health education, but the only site I found was a truly terrible psychiatry site that I couldn't possibly bring myself to publicize. Most of the "education" sites are focused on either creative arts education or K-12 education.

As for categories, I think it may make sense to wait and see what sites everyone comes up with before deciding for sure. But I think a sort by topic is most likely to be useful. "DS in K-12 education." "DS in creative arts education." "DS in healthcare education." etc.

Deidre

Sorry, I forgot to post why I think these sites should be added to our links.

The BBC site is a good overview of DS, with a how-to and some basic info. It also has a nice discussion of uses and a good library of videos.

The other two sites I like for fairly similar reasons. Both focus on teaching people how to use digital stories, empowering them to teach others (education). But they take it a step further and try to use this concept as a way to bring about a greater social good...an interesting concept.

Anita

My theme for the DS sites is human rights issues, which I felt is missing from our list of topics in the examples page of the site. Also since digital stories are the new communication technologies aimed at education, why forget the main purpose of education...that of educating to bring about social change and catering to diversity by bridging the gap between school and home/community.

http://www.bridgesweb.org/
This site is a non-profit school that conduct digital storytelling workshops around the world. That stories mainly focus on issues of developing nations. Being from India, I have worked in rural areas and urban slums educating diverse and at-risk children. I really liked the idea that the site conveys of bridging cross-cultural gaps through digital storytelling.

http://www.silencespeaks.org
This site focuses totally on digital stories of trauma survivors. I think that our DS site is missing examples that deal with issues relating to human rights.

http://ftx.apcwomen.org
This site talks about women's rights, feminist issues. Its more like a social network wherein you need to login to view their digital stories. Also the users can upload the stories that they have created.

Deidre

Anita, I really liked the Silence Speaks site. It is similar to, but not exactly, what I envision being helpful for patients and family members. I also liked that they have a space on the site devoted to discussion of the issues, ethical and otherwise, inherent in making such a site.

Digital story telling rubric - http://www.aps.k12.co.us/east/wolnersite/Your%20Rubric%20Digital%20Storytelling%20%20Podcasting%20in%20Science.htm
This web site is an example of a rubric that may be used by teachers as a guide while creating a digital story.

Digital story telling for the science classroom – http://beyond-school.org/2007/12/07
This site is used to show how digital story telling may be used in a science classroom. It has an example of a video a science concept on the page.

Digital Story telling discovery learning – http://blog.discoveryeducation.com/digital_storytelling
It is an online resource that connects schools around the country to discovery learning with digital storytelling. It is a blog page so teacher and students are able to post feedback regarding the site.

L Kieler

Christina,

I like the rubric site. That is always helpful when you are trying to evaluate a product.

http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/learnshops/digital/examples.php

This site is a resource site for teachers on creating digital stories, templates for students to use when preparing their stories, and a list of ideas on ways to use digital stories in the classroom

Site to post Digital Stories to benefit Charities:
http://whatkindofworlddoyouwant.com
This site by the band, Five for Fighting, is a place that people can post digital stories to raise funds for different charities and at the same time become more cognizant of problems that many people in our world deal with.

Another website entitled Digital Storytelling. From an overview, storytelling, planning, creating to delivering, the website presents a well-origanized information about the topic.

http://www.teachertube.com/
I think it's very interesting to use teachertube, teachers and students can upload video or digital story to the website, just like how Youtube works.

http://www.digistories.co.uk/
A digital storytelling website in UK. It's also a good portal to know how digital storytelling is made and what kind of skills are needed.

L Kieler

Site to post Digital Stories to benefit Charities:

http://whatkindofworlddoyouwant.com

The above site is my new favorite. It is a place that digital stories of a more social problem/health issue/personal experience can be posted to earn money for charities. Each hit on a story helps generate funds for identified charities. Imagine the possibilities for those of you in the health care profession in having students create videos or even school children create videos to benefit charity. Please take the time to look at some of these amateur stories which can be very moving. Though long, take a look at "Joel's Journey..." to help me raise funds for autism. It doesn't take money, just a moment of your time. Please tell others to watch it too. This is a service project of mine for Delta Kappa Gamma. Thank you.

This is a repeat of my above post but wanted to say more about it.

Deidre

Leon, I LOVE TeacherTube. I think the YouTube format is perfect for this, and it's easy to sort and search in a variety of ways to find what you want. I would love to see something like this for health care education...maybe that could be a TeacherTube channel.

Lauren

Here are three sites that I found interesting:

http://www.techsoup.org/learningcenter/training/archives/page10096.cfm?cg=searchterms&sg=digital%20story%20telling

Tech Soup is a non-profit technoloy assistance agency. It provides free technology information. This link has great information. It gives ten steps for DS that are easy to follow.

http://electronicportfolios.org/digistory/

I like this one because it provides lots of great resources and links (including ours) for DS. What is unique about this one also is that it has some information on international digital storytelling.

https://segue1.middlebury.edu/index.php?&site=ital0251c-w06&section=11842&action=site

This is a great example of how DS can be incorporated into foreign language studies. Professor Natasha Chang teaches a course in "Contemporary Italy" and has her students create digital stories about the topics. Her students who are non-Italians are learning the art of DS along with speaking Italian for the narration.

mymelchor

For this assignment, I googled digital storytelling to also affiliating the topic with various backgrounds such as dentistry, healthcare, and dental hygiene.

The ones that sparked my interest were:

http://www.rmpbs.org/panorama/index.cfm/tag/Digital-Storytelling.

This site consists of digital stories of individuals without healthcare insurance or benefits, and how it has affected their lives. It is a collaborative effort between Rocky Mountain PBS and CDS (Center for Digital Storytelling). I found this very interesting since we are now in the hands of a new administration and healthcare is always a hot topic.

http://www.az-aall.org/AAll/DigitalStories/digital%20index.htm

This is a collection of personal stories in ones life. Something that can always be good for the soul.

www.edutopia.org/use-digital-storytelling-classroom

This site is useful with engaging students to use digital storytelling for their own educational and/or learning experiences.

A. Nguyen

Some web site on digital storytelling I would like to add to our list of links are:
• Creative Narrations: http://www.creativenarrations.net/site/storybook/index.html
This site is both an educational and activist one. It promotes the use of DS as an effective, creative and versatile means of expression which is available to everybody.
• Center for Digital Storytelling: http://www.storycenter.org/stories/
This site, like the previous one, is very strong in its activist characteristics, which I think is a favorable thing for DS. This site offers very powerful stories from people from all walks of life.
• Memory’s Voices: http://www.storycenter.org/memvoice/
This site is a friendly user resource for understanding about the use of digital storytelling and basic guidelines for creating digital stories. The graphics are attractive and the information is presented in a clear, succinct and non-scrolling format.
These web sites are not outstanding in graphics or content, but I think they may be good enough for our link list because they show the potential of digital storytelling as a means of education. At the center of digital storytelling is the personal element that is reflected through media formats: digital photos, video clips, animation…, and then delivered by medium channels: on a screen via the internet or intranet .This individual-media link is a wonderful combination that has made digital storytelling a special means of expression in the classroom, in the community or even out in the street.
I have never stopped wondering at the liberating power of technology nowadays. Just like bloggers, who are free to publish their writing for anyone who cares enough to read it, normal people can raise their voices for those who care enough to listen to, like these women who are domestic violence victims talking about being abused by their beloved, or this man who is homeless telling about homelessness. This is what these web sites focus on. DS is first a means of self-expression, and then a channel to communicate, educate and promulgate for the better. Technology is the bridge for the individual to reach out for the mass. This is how I see DS fit in our current social context.

A. Nguyen

Deidre,
I like Stories for Changes. It is in the same line with the web sites I chose. The stories are straight from the herat of the tellers and they are meant to deliver a meaningful message not only to the tellers but to those who watch them for the pupose of changing, making things better.

A. Nguyen

Anita,
I agree with your point that we seem to lack the bridging of school and home/community in the content of our list. That's why I introduced web sites of activist nature to promote the idea that every human has a story and the message from each one may contribute to the change for the better if we care enough to give them chances to voice it up and listent to it. Raising community awareness is also an educational goal.

Yo Stiger

I also really liked http://storiesforchange.net/
It was eye catching, and easy to navigate through.

As Leon listed, Teachertube is one of my favorites. I check it out when I am lesson planning or want to see what they have on a certain topic.

The first site I went to was http://www.story-box.co.uk/, I thought it was just ok. Many of the links were broken, and some of the stories were pretty overdramatic!

I found this site: http://www.edutopia.org/tech-integration
while not exactly a DS site a good place for the use of technology in the classroom. When I did a search for digital storytelling I found examples, articles and students contest winners.

The above site lead me to this site:
http://mabryonline.org/archives/technology/index.html
which had examples from student film festivals.

This is another good site for digitial storytelling in education:
http://www.teachingteachers.com/story.htm

Lauren

Leon,
I also really liked TeacherTube. I like the idea that you can search topics, and it gives you videos that are specific to education. It was also, as Deidre pointed out, easy to use. I agree that this could be a good forum for healthcare education.

klrutter

http://terry-freedman.org.uk/artman/publish/printer_804.php

This is a great site for teachers, especially ELA teachers who work with small groups. It works like literature circles, only it’s for small group digital story creating, but each student is assigned a particular role that he/she must do.

http://techszewski.blogs.com/

This is a neat blog that not only contains an excellent resource page listed under Digital Storytelling in the classroom, but also has numerous links to other teaching tools. It has a pretty in-depth instruction on how to make digital stories, as well as how to use them in the classroom. You can also chat with other members.

http://electronicportfolios.org/digistory/

This site is where I found the previous 2 site links from. There are numerous sites for different areas: family, teachers, and international that offer different things. One site was about making digital stories of your families’ stories, to be handed down in digital format, rather than in the traditional written format. I thought that was neat because people who are not computer savvy, could pay a nominal fee and have an author create the digital story for them. There were also links that did not work or needed to be updated.

http://www.inms.umn.edu/elements/

I really like this site’s “elements of digital story-building” section. The way they have it set up would be worth looking at to set up part of our website in the instructional component. Unfortunately, the other links to examples and such did not work for me.

klrutter

http://www.techteachers.com/digitalstorytelling.htm

I love this website for helping kids learn about digital stories. The templates are pretty easy to follow, and it gives the teacher something to work with as far as NOT starting from scratch with beginners. I think this would be an excellent link to put on our site as a "teacher tool"!

klrutter

http://www.dtc.scott.k12.ky.us/technology/digitalstorytelling/teacherstories.html

The thing that makes this site so special is the very real stories that are told. This is a wonderful educational site, with digital stories from real educators, that can be shared with students to inspire their own stories. I think one of the most important things to do before beginning a project with students is have them buy into it, and see real life examples from people they can relate to. This is an excellent example of that!

L Kieler

I agree with klrutter. I also listed the www.dtc.scott site as a good resource. If I hit my kids with a more professional site and not with a counter of one created by a beginning DS user, their perfectionism issues would freeze them to the idea. By having more professional and more amateur examples it would help them to approach their first attempt perhaps a bit more realistically.

I know many of you are IT students and that is great but this site can also benefit the whole Dept. of Education at U of H and help those students who want to become elementary, middle and high school students if we provide a variety of samples to the site.

L Kieler

lkieler stands corrected... many want to become elementary, middle, and high school TEACHERS not students. Been a long day..... sorry.

L Kieler

Go to this site and look who's name is mentioned toward the bottom.

http://www.easternct.edu/smithlibrary/library1/digitalstorytelling.htm

L Kieler

Leon how did you make the links hot on this site. I am not figuring that one out. I think it would be good for all of us to make hot links of the sites we find for easier viewing.

Lauren

Anita,
Bridges to Understanding would be a great site to add to an "International" page. I really like it's mission to "enhance cross-cultural understanding and build global citizenship."

Anonymous

I found this interesting website: http://www.curriki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Demo/DigitalStoryTelling. It is a UN Millennium Tapestry Project of Digital Storytelling, which encourages digital stories to be crated to raise awareness of key issues from different countries. I did not have any difficulties at viewing these digital stories posted on this site.

I’m interested in learning to how to create digital storytelling and incorporate it into the anesthesia training curriculum. I focused on medical education digital storytelling and found several sites. This particular site, http://tcmtr.com/digitalstory/default.htm, uses digital storytelling to relay the experience of a flight nurse.

The other website found under the “medical digital storytelling” search is http://www.virtualpediatrichospital.org/providers/VirtualPedsPatients/PedsVPHome.shtml. This particular site touts the use of digital storytelling in the diagnosis of pediatric patients. When I looked at this site, it does use pictures to incorporate into the diagnostic algorithm. However, digital storytelling technology was not used in this website. This website may be included to give other medical educators ideas of how to use web resources for medical education.

Tatiana

The 3 sites I found to be interesting are:

http://techteachers.com/digitalstorytelling.htm

This is a repeat. I think this site is a great collection of resources for educators to teach and use digital stories.

http://www.patientvoices.org.uk

These DS are examples of patients epressing their journey of healing from various medical conditions. I think this would be great to use in the health section because so many physicians have patients that may not know how to express what they are feeling. Also, this can help them know that there are others who are in their shoes.

http://www.kenton.k12.ky.us/DigitalStory/dstindex.htm

This site is from the Kenton County school district to help both student and teachers develop DS for educational purposes and also have many resources for both the developer and the teacher who will be grading the projects.

http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/learnshops/digital/examples.php

here is another website with various examples of DS. I then discovered off of this website MCLI. This stands for Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (MCLI). The website is http://www.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/about/ and you can read about the history of them. Basically it is was originally established by Dr. Alfredo de los Santos Jr who established the Center of Instructional Technology (CIT) as a "demonstration center" for faculty and staff. In 1989, the name was changed to Maricopa Center for Learning & Instruction (MCLI) and the focus broadened from "promoting the introduction of technology into the learning environment" to "working with faculty to promote and support effective teaching and learning to meet the diverse needs of students."

Tatiana

I have used teachertube to find videos in dental care and I was very happy using it because it is user friendly and I also agree that it would be good to have it on our website. I have also seen videos in Spanish, this is useful for my patients who can't read. I ask them if they have access to the internet and they usually do have a home computer for their children and I ask them to go to this website or others to help educate them on oral disease and other topics that apply to them.

Tatiana

I agree with Anita in having a section on our website about human right issues. Also, a section or finding examples of cultural compentencies when treating patients. We are very diverse society that we need to know how to communicate with others.

Christina STEM Resources

The sites I choice were nice but I do not believe they should be added to the site. The sites are mostly informational as to what digital story telling is and what it can be used for. I tried to find on that takes you step by step on how to create one but did not see that for science.

Shawn

Ohio State U:

http://telr.osu.edu/storytelling/

I really liked the look and feel of the Technology Enhanced Learning and Research program at Ohio State University. Staffed and managed by seven from Ohio State University, this centralized Digital Storytelling portal is a very good example of collaborative education and research activities that are requisite for great programs.

One of the most obvious strengths is the size of the community it serves: this site is owned and maintained at the university level, open to all faculty, staff, and students – and it’s website gives the impression that this is a university sanctioned program, departmentalized and administered by a faculty administrator.

In many ways, this site looks as though it borrowed a great deal of Dr. Robin’s ideas: the navigation is down the left of the site, but the overall look and feel is remarkably similar to our DS site.

I like the synergies and interdisciplinary nature of this site – the fact that research, curriculum, and practical uses (examples) are all major themes here. I think it’s important for academic programs to integrate research activities into their overall missions in order to stay current with the field and to constantly provide current trends and practices into the information it distributes. It also gives credibility to the site, and establishes you as an expert in the field.

I’d add a section highlighting the research we do and what we’re learning in the field. Regardless, I think this is a great example and should be featured on our site.

Chi-Liang Yu

I like the design of the DST of Ohio State. But it does not contain as much information as EUODS website.
